Check Your House for Wood Rot

Building materials that get wet and do not recieve enough air to dry them are especially prone to rot. Rotted wood will not properly support the wall.

If you suspect rot in an existing wall, remove the the wall covering down to the studs and look for wood with dark blemishes, especially where the stud meets the bottom plate. Poke the wood with a screwdriver; if the screwdriver penetrates the wood without much pressure or if the wood feels soft, it's rotting. You should fix the water problem and replace the lumber with pressure treated stock.
